and distribution of bulk petroleum
fuels, the oil industry was
dominated by large worldwide
trusts that integrated industry
activities in a vertical manner;
from oil production to the sale of

of these companies was such that
they could establish and remove
presidents. Costa Rica escaped
this game; it is a known fact that
the fall of the González Flores
government and the advent
of the Tinoco dictatorship was
caused partly by the infamous
Sinclair Oil contract.

acting as an oligopoly and forcing
oil producing countries to form
