Nowadays, RECOPE is the largest
industry within the energy sector
in Central America, it`s annual sale
revenues reach an average of $3, 9
million U.S. dollars, with a growth
rate of 3% per year.
Since RECOPE was born, the global
oil demand has beenmultiplied by
11 million barrels per day (mbd) ;
from 57 million barrels per day in
1970 to almost 80 million barrels
per day today. Between 1950 and
1973, the world oil industry grew 9
times - with a growth rate of 10%
per year sustained over a period of
20 years- and in the same period,
the world produced more than 2.5
million new engine vehicles.
Demand for oil products in Costa
Rica is divided between four
major sectors: the transportation
sector, the industrial sector, power
generation and the trading sector.
Transportation
accounts
for
almost 80% of this consumption
and diesel is the best-selling
product.
In the rankings carried out by
America Economia magazine,
the largest 500 companies in
Latin America are evaluated and
RECOPE been placed in the first
place in Central America, as it
has generate the largest sales
revenues. It also stands out thanks
to infrastructure that is unique in
the area, such as the pipeline.
America Economía has executed
this ranking for the last 20
years (1991) and has a team of
researchers across the region
studying the behavior of the
economy and using performance
information reported by Latin
American companies in their
yearly financial statements. Their
studies indicate that there are
other large companies in Central
America whose wealth generation
level falls below RECOPE: INTEL
(Costa Rica), ICE (Costa Rica),
Panama Canal Authority (Panama),
and Copa Airlines (Panama), in
that respective order.

largest and most consolidated
companies in Latin America.
This highlights the contribution
that RECOPE has made to Costa
Rica’s competitiveness in the
region. In Latin America, the
rankings are lead by the three
major oil companies in the region:
Brazil’s Petrobras, Mexico´s Pemex
and Venezuela’s PDVSA.
