1983,
RECOPE
contributed staff and resources to
the Costa Rican Subsector Energy
Planning Scheme executed by the
Subsector Energy Direction (DSE),
acting as Technical Secretariat
of the Energy Subsector, this
entity supports the Ministerio de
Ambiente y Energía as rector of
the energy sector. This scheme has
been highlighted by international
agencies
throughout
Latin
America as a unique case due
to the quality and quantity
of information that has been
generated for decision making.
The DSE has created: the Energy
Information System (SIEN), the
Rational Use of Energy Act, the
national energy balances, six

CEPAL´s Hydrocarbon project has
been coordinated from by the
DSE (representing Costa Rica)
since its initiation. It is under these
circumstances that big savings
were identified in the country’s
current oil import structure.
Thanks to DSE´s efforts in
coordination
with
other
companies of the energy sector,
including Recope, Costa Rica has
not experienced power rationing
in the way that other countries
have.
