Annual Report 2013 www.recope.com
Energy savings with solar panels
The refinery terminal in Limón has a total installed
capacity of 131Kwp in solar panels, producing electricity for
self-consumption, asides from other various projects including
efficient lighting for the company.
The contribution of photovoltaic solar energy
generation is significant for the company. The refinery terminal
is at the forefront of this project. Systems have been installed in
the roofs of the administrative building with a capacity of 51Kwp,
supplying approximately 1300Kwh/Kwp per year, equivalent
to the annual consumption of 30 houses, with average use of
300Kwh per month.
This responds to the corporate policy of energy
saving and mitigation to the climate change, as it lowers energy
consumption and replaces the use of sodium or mercury with
silica and batteries replace acid with a special gel, which is safe for
the environment.
During the year 2013, this terminal replaced 25 lights in the
external lighting system with 157 watts LED (Light Emission
Diode) lights, saving 50% in energy and providing more security
when electric services are suspended.
Other terminals that have incorporated this technology
are the ones located in El Alto, with 13 LED lights for external
illumination in the administrative area and the Port in Moín, using
four towers with LED reflectors instead of conventional ones.
Health
Regarding health matters, RECOPE has been
involved in the fight against dengue and cleanup
campaigns during the last months, as this situation is
critical, given the incidence and seriousness of the cases
in the country.
During Occupation Health Week in
September, in various work centers staff joined forces
with the national program for the eradication of the
dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti, by collecting scrap,
zinc cans, plastic and glass bottles, which was also
properly classified.
The SAS Department at the refinery has been
eliminating breeding areas for the mosquito month
after month, throughout the year. In September 450
workers were involved in the project as one single
work team. In La Garita, the past three months
have included four cleaning and waste collection
campaigns, with a strategy designed by the SAS
Department in this terminal, including neighboring
areas and the Rio Alajuela bank.
In the Hernán Garrón Building, the
Emergency Response Team, volunteers and the Goods
and Services Maintenance Unit, in coordination
with SAS General Management, cleaned the
building surroundings, checked vacant lots and led
an informative campaign among the community
neighbors. Internally, messages were sent using
corporate emails and conferences were imparted to
the cleaning crew and maintenance staff, who helped
by identifying possible mosquito breeding areas.
