occasions RECOPE intervened
in the reconstruction of fallen
bridges, such as the Cataratas
bridge andmany others that were
destroyedby thewater. Landslides
on the roads were frequent, and
RECOPE participated many times
in the construction of roads and
other works.
The current access road to down
Talamanca, Shiroles and Suretka,
(using the Volio route) was built
by RECOPE to access La Pera
(San José #1 well) with heavy
machinery and deep drilling
equipment. Upon leaving the
area, RECOPE´s Suretka camp
and all related works were left
in the hands of the neighboring
communities.
The
countries
investigations
during
the
eighties
were
carried out with the support of
companies such as PEMEX and
Petrocanada, and allowed to
map out potential oil sources in
Maritime Zones and in different
parts of the country (Talamanca,
Matina, Nicoya and San Carlos).
Another important event that has
occurredwithinRECOPE´s50years
of existence is the nationalization
of the Juan Santamaria Airport in
1978, during the administration
of Daniel Oduber (1974-1978),
and the opening of the Daniel
Oduber Airport in 1995, during
the
administration
of
José
María Figueres Olsen (with the
encouragement of Don Manrique
Gómez). RECOPE is present in
these two terminals in order to
assist and provide aircraft´s with
what could perhaps be considered
the best fuel in the region. The
workers of these terminals work
under sun and rain, they are the
face that RECOPE presents to
world when assisting and meeting
aircrafts with the best fuel in the
region.
The year 1997 marks another
important moment in the history
of RECOPE, it is the year in which
the TERRA project initiated. It
compromised the development
of
a
National
Geographic
Information System with the aim
of analyzing homeland political,
social, environmental and legal
information so as to support long-
term sustainable development
(specialists were required).
As such, after a 20 year delay in the
production of aerial photography
and digital mapping, RECOPE aids
Costa Rica in obtaining a 1:40,000
scale aerial photography and a
1:25,000 scale Digital Mapping.
