RECOPE ANNUAL REPORT 2015
(ICE), increased by 5.3% in relation to the previous
year (2014); however, total sales (domestic sales
+ ICE) over the same period decreased by 1.9%
(22,229 m
3
); this due to the fact that the Costa Rican
Institute of Electricity did not purchase as much
thermal energy fuel as the previous year. Diesel 50
sales accounted for 37.6% (1,138,164 m
3
) of the
company’s total sales in 2015; RECOPE’s second
highest selling product for the year.
In comparison to the previous year (2014), the
demand for Diesel 50 fuel increased in the following
economic sectors: (i) fuel filling station sales
increased by 4.5%; (ii) peddler sales (vendor’s who
do not have a fixed point of sale) increased by
11.5%; (iii) transportation sector sales increased by
4.8%; (iv) manufacturing industry sales increased
by 0.1%; (v) fishing sector sales increased by 4%;
and (vi) other sector sales increased by 26.5%. The
construction sector’s sales decreased by -0.8% in
relation to 2014, but exhibit an increase of 36.6% in
comparison to 2013.
GASOLINE
Total gasoline sales in 2015, in relation to the
previous year (2014: 89,250 m
3
), increased by 8.3%.
Premium gasoline, in particular, showed an increase
in sales of 4%; this due to a matter of consumer
perception rather than octane requirement. Even
though the import of vehicles that are equipped with
technologies that recommend the use of gasoline
with an octane rating of 91 or higher have indeed
risen, this market sector is still marginal. In 2015, the
ratio of Plus 91 sales V.S. Premium Gasoline sales
was 53/47, in favor of Plus 91 fuel. In 2014, the ratio
was 57/43, respectively.
In 2015, 99% of Plus 91 and Premium Gasoline
sales were purchased by local fuel filling stations,
while the remaining 1% was purchased by direct
clients (fishermen and peddlers, among others).
