and of a more prosperous, equitable
and sustainable today and tomorrow,
however, diversifying the energy mix with
cleaner alternatives to oil is particularly
important. This shift to cleaner and more
environmentally friendly fuel alternatives
is taking place in spite of Costa Rica’s
heavy dependence on petroleum-based
products.
Due to its specialized equipment and
facilities, RECOPE is well equipped to
import and transport petroleum products
from the port of discharge in Limón, to
its numerous sales and storage sites.
The National Fuel System (NFS),
developed over the course of 54 years,
has: an oil pipeline system that spans
533 kilometers [through which various
types of fuels are conveyed]; a capacity
of 4 million barrels [in fuel storage tanks
and LPG spheres]; 5 pumping stations
[in Limón, Siquirres, Turrialba, El Alto &
La Garita]; 4 terminals [in Moín, El Alto,
La Garita & Barranca]; and specialized
facilities in 4 different international
airports in Costa Rica.
By pumping and transporting fuel
through multi-purpose pipelines, an
estimated 300 tanker trucks are no
longer required on a daily basis.
The NFS is composed of various
interrelated subsystems, including:
export/import terminals; production/
formulation units; sales and storage
sites; pipeline systems and pumping
stations; auxiliary services; safety and
environmental protection units; &
quality assurance laboratories.
The company’s infrastructure was
valued at $1,244 million as at December
31
st
, 2016. Since that time, as the
country’s economy and demographic
structure grew, so did the company’s
infrastructure. This system is, on
account of the supply chain integration
activities carried out by RECOPE, truly
first of its class at a regional level. The
company has invested over $818 million
USD to date and, as of December 31
st
,
2016, its product inventory amounts to
$208 million USD.
In view of the above, RECOPE ranked
first in Revista America Economia’s (the
Journal of American Economy’s) list of
largest companies in Central America.
The list was published in July 2015,
in a special edition of the journal. The
contributions made by RECOPE to the
international competitiveness of Costa
Rica are summarized herein. In light
of these contributions, Fitch Ratings
Inc. has given RECOPE, for the 5
th
consecutive year, the coveted AAA
rating.
