RECOPE’s largest supplier of
hydrocarbons
In 2016, there was a decrease in the
number of oil shipments purchased in
relation to the previous year, which is
attributable to: the increase in the size
of the shipments, which in turn can
be attributed to the dredging activities
carried out at the docks; and a shipment
delivered to the Port of Caldera, in 2015,
in the interest of fulfilling the fuel needs
of Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad
ICE’s thermoelectric power plant in
Garabito. The number of shipments
purchased in 2016 was 135, while 143
were purchased in 2015.
In the matter of procurement methods,
RECOPE imported $1,072 million USD
worth of petroleum products through
international competitive bidding (ICB)
procedures (representing 99.9% of the
company’s total imports); whereas the
remaining 0.1% (equivalent to $1.56
million USD) were procured through
domestic competitive bidding (DCB)
procedures.
In the matter of top suppliers by import
volume, Valero Marketing has become,
over the past few years, RECOPE’s
largest supplier of hydrocarbons;
accounting for 39% of total imports
in January-December 2016, followed
closely by Cargil with 17.3%. The
largest supplier in recent years, in terms
of import volume, is the United States of
America; accounting for 94.6% of the
total imports as at December 31
st
