2016 ANNUAL REPORT
21
pumping facilities (which together
required installing a pipeline
spanning 17 kilometers), and the
installation of the auxiliary security
and automated test equipment.
The total cost of the SAGAS
Project – overseen by Felguera
IHI S.A., a Spanish company – is
$72,004,662. The exterior surface
and the columns of the 4 spheres
were coated with paint and the
pertinent QA tests were completed
in 2016. Some small details were
detected during the QA tests and
have yet to be effectively addressed.
Upon completion of the SAGAS
Project, the company’s installed storage
capacity will increase from 63,145
barrels to 163,358 barrels; this value,
however, does not even include the
new horizontal cylinders, which would
increase RECOPE’s storage capacity by
an additional 9,420 barrels.
With this system in place, Costa Rica
will be fully prepared to face the ever-
increasing demand for LPG, which
shows a significant upward trend
nationwide. Liquefied petroleum gas is
one of the most commonly used fuels in
schools, hotels, restaurants, cafes and
ordinary households. LPG is generally
used for cooking food and drying
clothes. LPG is used in high temperature
ovens (in the industrial sector) and in
tourism-related transportation, public
buses, garbage trucks and forklifts (in
the transportation sector).
Storage Capacity in Terminals
In order to meet demand and offer
nationwide
coverage
and
fuel
distribution services in a timely manner,
the storage capacity of the terminals
and points of sale is being expanded
to increase the inventory storage limit,
across all regions in Costa Rica.
This project involves installing 8 new
storage tanks, which will increase the
storage capacity of RECOPE’s distribution
centers by 320,000 barrels. The storage
tanks will be installed as follows:
•
Two aviation fuel storage tanks,
each with a storage capacity of 25
thousand barrels (4,000 m
3
), in the
Barranca Terminals.
•
Two regular gasoline storage tanks,
each with a storage capacity of 35
thousand barrels, in the El Alto
Terminals.
•
Two regular gasoline storage tanks
and two diesel storage tanks (4 in
total), each with a storage capacity
of 50,000 barrels, in the La Garita
Terminals.
