RECOPE ANNUAL REPORT 2015
of supporting Costa Rica’s goal to become carbon
neutral and achieving the corporate sustainability
objectives laid forth in the company’s 2016-2021
Strategic Plan.
Among the 2015 accomplishments is an employee
awareness and training program. The program
was implemented with the support of Universidad
Earth (Earth University) and in accordance with the
standards on carbon footprint management and the
Carbon Neutral Country Program (ISO 14064 and
INTE 120106); other accomplishments include: (i)
improvements made to the facilities to expedite the
identification and quantification of greenhouse gas
sources; and (ii) the definition and implementation
procedures of the projects related to saving energy,
energy efficiency and/or waste management,
with the intention of reducing RECOPE’s carbon
footprint.
SAS-GRE compiled all the necessary information
related to the identification and quantification
of GHG sources, and laid the foundation for the
development of a Greehouse Gas Information
System, with plans to adapt it for use in all other
company facilities.
On the topic of energy management, the
construction of a modern 34.5kW substation was
completed in the Moín plant and distribution site
in Limon. This new substation allows the company
to operate with a greater degree of safety and to
monitor the electrical system in real-time, leading
to a greater control in energy consumption. These
efforts will be reflected in the energy savings and
the performance of the company’s operations.
Advancements made in furtherance of
an integrated health, environment and
industrial safety management system
In accordance with the diagnostics performed in
2013, 2014 and 2015, in the Moín and Department
company to save energy when heating the water
used for the boilers. Moreover, several purchases
were made to improve energy efficiency, including
solar panels, a daylighting system, and energy
saving LED bulbs.
Improvements to RECOPE’s greenhouse
gas (GHG) management system
In order to measure RECOPE’s carbon footprint,
the company: (i) trained the pertinent personnel on
identification and quantification of greenhouse gas
sources; (ii) expanded the information system; (iii)
developed an audit procedure; and (iv) implemented
the company’s reduction and mitigation projects,
in compliance with national and international
standards; all this with the purpose of supporting
corporate sustainability and Costa Rica’s goal to
become carbon neutral.
RECOPE’s environmental and industrial safety
management procedures are coordinated by
the Environmental Management Program (PGAI
as per its Spanish acronym) and the General
Management’s Health, Environment and Safety
Committee. Environmental and industrial
safety management encompasses the waste
management system, the improvements made to
the systematization of environmental metrics, the
emergency response capacity, the risk prevention
measures, and the company’s resilience against
natural and anthropogenic hazards.
In complement of these efforts, the Moín plant
and storage site promoted the improvements
made to the carbon footprint management system
by consulting third-party experts on personnel
awareness, and by training employees on the
identification and quantification of greenhouse
gas sources, the information system, the audit
procedures, and the development of reduction and
mitigation projects, in compliance with national and
international standards; all this with the purpose
